Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is more commonly known by its acronym, ICSI. During in vitro fertilization IVF , the embryologist isolates healthy-looking sperm to inject into the cytoplasm or outer layer of the egg or oocyte. This process is performed with special micro-pipettes under microscopic control. ICSI enhances fertilization in cases of very low sperm count, poor motility, or a high percentage of abnormal sperm. In addition, it also can increase success when the egg can be difficult to penetrate because of a thick outer layer.
Understanding Fertility Problems: Obstacles to Pregnancy
Once attached, the sperm pushes through the outer layer to the inside of the egg cytoplasm , where fertilization takes place. Sometimes the sperm cannot penetrate the outer layer, for a variety of reasons. In these cases, a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI can be done along with in vitro fertilization IVF to help fertilize the egg. During ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm the egg.
Male Infertility pp Cite as. Conventional methods of semen analysis rely heavily upon simple measurements of sperm quality which do not equate well with fertility. Thus direct tests of the fertilising capacity of an ejaculate are required in order to assess male infertility. The ideal assessment would be an in vitro fertilisation system incorporating mature human ova.
