Although Paul Gauguin has been dead for nearly a century, last fall he should have seduced us moderns anew with his translucent paintings. Simultaneously, art historian Nancy Mowll Mathews' "Paul Gauguin: An Erotic Life" was published -- a scholarly, but breathy, biography that traced the bisexual urges and actual consummations inherent in both Gauguin's art and life, as well as exploring van Gogh's unconsummated desire for Gauguin. Great art and steamy sex -- what more could one ask for? But then bin Laden brought down the World Trade Center and the cultural impact of the Chicago show was greatly dampened. This summer, however, Gauguin has a second chance to seduce us at the Metropolitan Art Museum in Manhattan. Because we were interested in the lure of the erotic, we discussed Gauguin's possibly monstrous sexuality with biographer Nancy Mowll Mathews.

Vincent van Gogh: The Paintings (Two Chairs)
When French painter Paul Gauguin, beautifully played by actor Oscar Isaac, strides onto the screen in the new film "At Eternity's Gate," Julian Schnabel's hypnotic meditation on Van Gogh and the tortures and exhilaration of art, he cuts a swaggering figure: a brash, iconoclastic follower of no one, sure of himself and his own instincts, self-centered to a fault and just passing through. He bears a striking resemblance to the man who inhabits "Gauguin: A Spiritual Journey," an exhibition that opened recently at the de Young Museum. The show of 60 paintings from the collection of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen also features revelatory examples of the artist's expressive printmaking, painted wood bas reliefs, and over a dozen, lesser-known primitive experiments with ceramics only a Gauguin enthusiast could love. Beginning its narrative arc in , the exhibition lays out its two main themes: how this original artist's pivotal relationships with fellow artists and his wife shaped his work; and his quest for spirituality, not only his own but that of other cultures he believed could unlock the secrets of nature. But what might have been a good idea in theory doesn't work in the context of the show.

Background The two paintings of Vincent's and Paul Gauguin's chairs are among the most often analyzed of Van Gogh's works. Jan Hulsker comments "There are few pictures of Vincent's about which so much was written in later years. These companion paintings have attracted much attention because of the symbolic interpretations underlying the subject matter.

He has been widely celebrated to say the least since his death in at 37 years old. It was created by a team of painters. Supposedly, van Gogh sold only a single painting in his lifetime. He painted The Starry Night , but he was no star.
