Urinary stones can be a problem in goats, especially in show and pet wethers, but also in intact bucks. Stones often lodge in the bend in the penis called the sigmoid flexure See Figure 1 , or at the small tip of the penis called the pizzle. The reason that wethers are especially at risk is that the urethra, the tube that empties the bladder, is usually smaller than in bucks. Does can get bladder stones also, but these usually pass easily through the short straight female urethra. The formation of urinary stones is a metabolic disease.

Urinary Calculi in sheep and goats
What is It? The disease occurs when calculi stones , usually comprised of phosphate salts, lodge in the urinary tract and prevent urination. Normally, phosphorus is recycled through saliva and excreted via feces in ruminants. High grain, low roughage diets decrease the formation of saliva and therefore increase the amount of phosphorus excreted in the urine.

Urinary Calculi, a urinary-tract condition in goats and sheep, prevents both urination and breeding in males. The twists and turns of the male urethra make passing solid particles difficult at best and impossible at worst. Urinary Calculi is a disease that can and does kill animals quickly. Urinary Calculi is almost always the result of improper feeding by the producer.
