Given that hair slivers can lead to infected wounds, pain and chronic drainage, these authors present case studies of several patients who presented with hair slivers in the foot. Material such as glass, plastic, metal objects and wood comprise 90 percent of all foreign bodies that can enter into the foot. One foreign body in particular that is unusual but seems to occur more frequently in our practice than one would imagine is the hair sliver. Foreign bodies can be diagnostic dilemmas since many may not be visible on X-ray.

Here's a fun fact about hair: Sometimes a stray strand can just burrow its way into your skin. It's a phenomenon known as a "hair splinter. If you've never heard of such a thing, you're not alone. Some people on Reddit were mystified by the phenomenon, but to other commenters especially hair stylists , these splinters were old hat. I can't be the only one who hasn't heard of a hair splinter," one person wrote. It turns out that hair splinters can actually be serious. A man suffered from agonising foot pain so bad he went to hospital, only to discover he had a 'hair splinter' stuck in his heel. The unnamed year-old endured the discomfort for eight hours and found it made walking difficult. When doctors in Brazil examined his right heel, they found a lock of hair had penetrated the surface of his skin and come into contact with a nerve. This is a medical condition known as cutaneous pili migrans CPM. The medics believe the patient 'trampled' on the hair while walking barefoot, which caused the strand to become 'embedded'.
