After years of struggling for equal rights, acceptance, and to be recognized for their lifestyles, the LGBT community in America rejoiced when legislators declared same-sex marriage legal nationwide in The country has made great strides with increasing awareness on the subject of homosexuality and transgender issues through PSAs and through advocacy groups educating the public. The movement by the LGBTQ community was centered on the desire not to be shunned for their differences but to be accepted as part of the fabric of society. As a result of the growing public and societal acceptance of diverse lifestyles, more and more athletes and celebrities are feeling safe enough to come out and embrace their orientation proudly. The WWE has had a rich and diverse group of Superstars over the years from different ethnicities, backgrounds, and creeds, so it should come as no surprise that some of those stars identify as LGBTQ.

There has been a lot of public attention on couples in WWE over the past few years, but while Superstars finding love in the company is increasing at an impressive rate, the diversity in the company is also worth noting. For a number of years, it was made clear that Darren Young was the only openly homosexual WWE star and the company was unable to make that part of any storylines while he was part of the company. Over the years, life outside of the ring has changed and right now it's fantastic to see that WWE is welcoming the change in their company as well. Sonya Deville is credited as the first-ever openly gay female wrestler in WWE. The former MMA star has never stated that she is anything else and has always been clear about her sexuality. Deville has also recently been part of the cast of Total Divas where she was able to have her own float at Pride Fort Lauderdale.
The show business now has actors, producers, and even directors that have come up with their sexuality openly in front of the world. There are many athletes from the sports industry across the world who during or after their career revealed about their sexuality which turned the world around for their fans. The wrestling industry has never lacked behind when it comes to any trend, as many of the times, it is the one that sets one.
While the story angle is yet to be played out fully, this gives us the opportunity to look at the various times the company tried to play out the male fantasy on their programming. While there are many instances of WWE shocking the audience with such moments, they have almost every time missed the mark.
